My fiance and i have a golden retriever who likes going outside no matter what the weather. what we do is have an old towel right near the door and when she comes in, we wipe her feet with it, and get it a little wet sometimes if her paws are really muddy, but we have to do this since we have white carpet upstairs and light tan carpet downstairs and she will run in as soon as she can and mud on white carpet is not nice. then when the towels need washed, just make a load of muddy towels or add a little bleach and you will be good to go.

All you have to do is take a piece of crap rug, put it by your door and when he comes in, make him sit on the rug. Then you designate a certain towel to your dog and use that towel to wipe its feet before it goes anywhere else in the house.

He's a dog - try to let him be one! Of course he can't walk with plastic bags on his feet. If you're so concerned, trim the hair on his feet short and wipe his feet when he comes in.

I really don't think you can, they are going to get dirty no matter what. but what you can do , is have a towel near the doorway. so when you come in, you can wipe his paws. before he runs around in the house, my cousin does that to hers.
