You need to do two things. First, connect the digital output of the DVD player to the home theater system. The other "2 output" audio (I am assuming one is red and one is white) will not give you 5.1, only the single-plug digital output can do that. That output will be either optical or coaxial. Make sure you plug that into a digital input on the home theater system.

Then as a next step, you may need to go into your DVD player menu and make sure that the "digital output" format is set to BITSTREAM rather than "PCM". This is a step that is often overlooked and some players do not make this the default.

Once you have done this and set the receiver/home theater system to the digital input you used, you should see it start to decode the 5.1 formats. Make sure a DVD is playing at the time you test to make sure there is a 5.1 signal coming through the digital output.

Good luck

Its basically easy.Your home theater (surround sound) system has the audio/video output jacks on the back.red, white, yellow wires.Your going to connect the cables on your system to output because they are going INTO the TV,so you hook them up to your TV input.Hope this explains it a little easier.
