This really annoys me. I've had the same experience at BT. For any call centre that is there to serve english speaking people, it should be an essential criterion that the staff members should speak clear english without any strong accent so that people can understand them.
I'm not bothered where they are located or what nationality or race they are, but as speech is the key element of their jobs, clear and understandable english is paramount. Perhaps these people's telephone speaking voices are not tested when they are employed for fear of being accused of racism by the PC brigade.

For the same reason why most call centres seem to be staffed by people in Pakistan or India these days - outsourcing. It's cheaper to hire people there than here.

It's common practice these days. They're mostly from India, cos the company thinks it's cheaper to hire them. The banks started this practice, now it's extended to other businesses.
