I work for US Citizenship & Immigration Services, so you think I would know this.. I do know, but Ive heard different stories. I know I could travel WITHOUT a birth certificate, but that it will take around two hours to clear me and have my citizenship searched by CBP & etc, which could prove to be a royal pain, or so Ive heard, due to the CBP's rudeness. I plan on traveling to Canada after visiting some relatives in MI though, and being a busy college student and fulltime employee, my birth certificate is miles and miles away. Is there anything that can suffice for this? Of course I have my government issued ID, such as my license.. And of course my SS Card & such, but is that really any good? Is there ANYTHING else? Thanks..

I just wanted to note that, Passports are only required for *air travel* in the year 2007. Starting in 2008, the rule will be implemented by land. This comes official from the Dept of State website, as well as USCIS' & their Customer Service Reps.

As of January 2007, the government is requiring you to travel with a passport. This is especially true for air travel. I have relatives in eastern Canada and I have driven from Maine across the border and in recent years they have been more lenient and not even checked proof of citizenship, however, with the new passport requirements, they have become more strict.

If you are flying, you will have to have a passport. I would advise to keep checking the official website:

When I went last year, all we had to have was a birth certificate, ss card, and it didn't take long to get across the border at New York. There was 4 of us that went. They asked questions before we could go across, but that was no big deal. Hopefully you won't have too much trouble getting there, but without a birth certificate, there could be problems.

go get your passport. i know it's a pain in the butt, but go get it. oh yeah, don't you have employee ID? that should be good enough.
