I see them used as measurements everyday in my recipes but I have never actually seen one.
What are they and what is the point in them?

A tablespoon is 15ml. It is larger than a dessertspoon (which isnt usually used for measuring)
the point of them is that it is easy to measure out ingredients by the spoonful rather than weighing them, especially if they are liquid. it gives you an accurate measurement.
You can buy sets of measuring spoons that are stored neatly stacked inside each other. The largest is the tablespoon, then the teaspoon (5ml), half a teaspoon, a quarter, and then an eight of a teaspoon.

An English tablespoon is 3 teaspoons, now defined in ml.
So a modern English tablespoon is 15 ml

This is very close to 1/2 a fluid ounce (about 28 point something ml)

As an American cup contains 8 fl oz, an American tablespoon is 1/16 of an American cup.

These are just standardised sizes of the spoons that form part of a table flatware (cutlery) set.

In any case, when you are cooking, you put in quantities that taste good to you.

Good luck

Some measurements that small have to be accurate or you achieve disaster. Back in the days when there were no uniform measurements, they used half a walnut shell. (Not that long ago.) One teaspoon of salt makes good bread; one tablespoon and you have produced play dough. Edible; not edible. Also, if you want to make Grandmother's cookies or Wolfgang Puck's whatever--you can do it! Just get the same ingredients, measure right, and bake as long as they do. Buy a set of stainless steel measuring spoons as your next appliance and master one recipe you like. It's fun.

A tablespoon is a standard measurement used in the US. It is very important in cooking. Understand that cooking is very much a science. Using the right measurements of certain ingredients causes specific chemical reactions in food to create the desired effect.

A tablespoon is a very big pudding spoon that is used to measure things in recipies. I have one that was given to me by my mum!
In most stores that sell kitchen things (scales and saucepans etc) they sell them or you can buy measuring scoops that hold a tablespoon amount (these are better because they are more accurate!)

Three teaspoons equal a tablespoon.

They're just another standardized measuring system -- different from metric, but still accurate enough to produce uniform results.
