1) Mixing paints is not an exact science. Some each of red, blue, and yellow should work. Any other widely separated triplet of colours also have a good chance of working.
2) For colours on a computer screen works, even though there are plenty of comments and explanations that can be made about the subject.

Mix yellow (primary) and blue (primary) to get green (secondary).
Mix green (secondary) and red (primary) to get brown (tertiary).
OR
Mix orange or red paint with a small amount of black paint. If you need a darker brown add more black. To make a lighter, less saturated brown, add white.

Red and green make a nice brown. To add a little interest to it, add a little bit of yellow.

If you mix all colors together you get brown. The color wheel, the primary colors, red, yellow and blue...mixed together make brown.

Using red, yellow and blue, mostly red and yellow and allow the blue to darken the brown.
I usually have better luck just handing the paints and paper plates to kids and letting them mix (trial and error) until they discover brown for me.
