The most popular seem to be Heartgard and Sentinel. Any preferences?

I recommend Heartgard. The most important thing to do is to make sure they get it every month. Pick an easy day to remember, like the 1st, 15th, or last day of the month.

Whatever works best for your dog. My dog preferred Heartgard but not all dogs like them. Interceptor is another good brand. For those really picky dogs out there you can also use Revolution. It is a monthly topical that treats for fleas and ticks as well as heartworm. It's an expensive product but you're paying for the 3-in-1. I also like Heartgard because (and I'm not entirely sure if they still offer this), but if your dog contracts heartworm disease and you've been using their product, they will pay for treatment which can cost upwards of $800. Check on other guarantees like that.

I like Heartgard. It's easy to give and my dog thinks it's a treat. In addition to heartworms, it also prevents hookworms and roundworms. Plus, if you buy the year supply, you get a $5 rebate.
Like someone else said, Merial will pay for your dog's treatment/tests if he/she should become infected while on Heartgard. They will also pay for your preventative once the infection is clear. However, they will only cover this IF the Heartgard has been purchased from your vet. It does not apply to Heartgard purchased from on-line pharmacies.

There are alot of options. If you have a collie or collie mix, DO NOT USE heartgard; it's fatal for them.

Sentinel covers heartworms along with other intestinal parasites (like Heartgard and Interceptor) but also covers fleas.

Intercepted is similar to heartgard but is small and little easier to get them to eat. I'm drawaing a blank on the details of this, but i know that it covers more intestinal parasites than heartgard.

Personally, if you do not have a tick problem or use a tick collar, i would recommend Revolution. It covers heartworms, internal parasite, and fleas but the weight range for the doses is smaller. this means that the dose will be a ten pound range instead of 20 lb range.
