Comes from the french word m'aidez, which means "help me" and which is pronounced "mayday." Pilots and ship captains use this. Very easy to say and remember and describes a situation where help is needed immediately all with one short word. hope this helped:)

To be clear, mayday is only to be used for immediately life threatening situations, your engines fail then you call mayday because you are going down now. For things that are important but aren't about to kill you right now you call "pan-pan" and if you just want to pass on information that everyone needs to have then the word is "securite".

Mayday: you are about to die
Pan: you are going to die if someone doesn't help
Securite: someone else is going to die if they get unlucky
