Root canals are actually not the "procedure of choice" by dentists now. A dentist can actually make more money by doing several fillings/extractions in the hour that it takes to do one root canal. There are medical reasons that a tooth needs to be treated by either a filling or a root canal. It has to do with the extensiveness of the decay, the pain of the tooth and many other factors.
I assume your friend was just playing "catch up". And it's a good thing. If those teeth had gone much longer, he/she could have lost them.
Too much sugar (soda, candy, gum, sports drinks, tea, kool-aide), not flossing regularly, not having teeth cleaned regularly, not having cavities filled when they were small and many other things can contribute to the need of a root canal.
Needing root canals doesn't mean someone is nasty with their mouth. It just means they're missing a vital step or two.
Happy New Year!

Root canals are the choice of the day now. Don't hear too much of the plain good old fillings. Cost more $$$$ for root canals.
Not always from poor dental hygiene. My son had 3 within a few years each feel apart and he visits the dentist every 6 months faithfully.

One's good oral hygiene gets nullified if one is having abusive or junk fast food habits including chocolates, aerated sodas, etc. If your friend continues with such habits, he/she may see more cascading effects and variety.
