Well if Saddam deserved the death penalty, then the US deserves it along with him.
After all, Saddam was hand-picked, trained, aided and funded by the CIA to replace the old president of Iraq; Abdul Rahman Arif. He refused Washington's "suggestions" and so he was replaced by someone who would.
It was only after Saddam started thinking for himself, that the US declared him an enemy, and had him removed.
Eventually, the chickens come back to roost. And now the US is mired in a quagmire of it's own making.

Saddam Hussein will undoubtably become a martyr for the Sunni. As a rallying figure for terrorism, he will probably be touted by some. True terrorists however need no rallying figure.

I don't think by any standards especially the Islamic one, he met the conditions to be a martyr in the first place.
Terrorism will always occur as long as radical islamists exist and perpetuating in being a Quranic literalist. Only correct understanding of the holy Quran will demobilise and extinguish the burning fire of extremism.
Happy Eid al-Adha
Peace and Love.
