last night I received a very scary harrassing phone call from some man who said he wanted to sexually assault me and kill me, at first I thought it was a joke but he called back again. i locked myself in the bathroom and called the police. when the police got to my house they looked on my caller ID and saw that it was called from a cell phone. they told me unfortunately they could do nothing because they did not who was on the cell phone or where they were at. he called again today. i do not believe that you cannot trace a cell phone. if i called the white house from my cell phone and said i wanted to kill the president i am sure the FBI would be at my door within the hour. what can I do and what can the police do to find out and or trace this cell phone?

Ok, the phone company can't give you the info but they can give it to the police department. A cell phone number comes back to the carrier when traced. They need to take a subpeona to the cell phone carrier's office. The carrier can then tell the police who that number is registered to. If it's his home phone then the same principal applies with the telephone company.

Call the police back. If they don't follow up on it go to the local prosecutor's office and make your complaint.

First I would call your phone company and explain to them the situation. My phone company where I live a thing called *57 after a call, you push that and it traces the call. The police can then contact the phone company and the call has been traced. Call your phone company. After that, I would call the cell phone companies and ask them if they can tell you if they have that customer with that phone number. If they can't give you any information, then I am sure the police can get it from the major cell phone companies.
But don't wait, do something about it now.

If you have already contacted you local police department and they stated they can not help you try another department such as a county sheriffs office. I have been on ride alongs with multiple police officers where we have taken reports about harassing phone calls the officer would call that person and inform them that a report has been file. There is ways to search who owns a cell phone and who has been talking on it. If the county sheriff states they cannot help you and you are truly in fear of your life contact your local FBI branch.
