It seems that is a common place answer on here. That without their beliefs being enforced on everyone, suddenly rape and murder are OK.

Allow me to apologize to the handful I have met on here that don't fit that description.

Some... yes. And some believe there religion is the ONLY SOURCE of morality in the world.

I can not count the number of times I have read "Why don't atheists go around killing people and raping children since they don't believe in God?", or something similar.

But to be fair, this is only like 1-5% of them

Morality doesn't come from religion it comes from our conscience as far as I am concerned. The Bible serves to remind us that our self evident beliefs can be lead astray and it is more of a calibration tool. The law is written in our hearts. The first time you do something wrong you feel it but the second time a little less until you have reprogrammed yourself to think wrong is right. Some atheists are very moral people and some Christians are questionable at best. The Bible is a measuring stick that lets you know how far from the truth you have strayed. Christians should use it and tune up often. Atheists are free to do their own thing but I doubt they think murder and rape is OK.

Some are, it seems. Others are better informed.

C S Lewis produced, as an appendix to "The Abolition of Man", a extensive set of exemplary references to a morality which is very recognisable but sourced beyond Christianity.

The One True God educates mankind through His Divine Messengers from eternity to eternity.
Followers of various religions falsely claim that their religion is the sole religion on earth; then where is God's education before and after that?
This is clearly the age of human maturity that we can put our questions on the Internet and get the perfect answers in the Holy Books also available on the Internet. Pray for your success.

Morality is not the same as salvation. You can be a moral person and still not be saved. After you are saved you try to be a moral person by the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

religion inflates our shame.

even animals show ethics and morality. why are we so special?

EDIT:
in fact the bible has more people raping and murdering in the name of god than has ever taken place in the animal kingdom in just the name of whatever! animals (we see) court and the female selects the male (generally speaking) and they copulate. no forcing (for the most part). Murder could only be described as killing your own species (we do not murder animals, we just kill them for protection and food, even as animals do to others outside their species), so we would have to use only intraspecies killing for a comparison of murder. again, a rarity. usually only takes place over territory in larger creatures (like lions) but it doesn't always lead to death, and the lion doesn't eradicate the entire pride. so if you want to talk ethics and morality, the bible is the LAST place we should take our cues from!

Because, apparently, the only thing stopping Xians from raping and murdering in the streets is fear of hell. So they assume, falsely, that everyone is like that.

Aren't you the guy that jusked 'whats wrong with gays getting married'?
The very conclusion you are jumping to is what we are trying to tell you will happen.
There are many "moral" people in this world who are not Christian. But not enough to keep child/infant rape from becoming legal.
