A chatty, lively girl with a sense of humour is what I like.
That would keep me interested, but your guy might be different, he might like to listen to you go on about Eastenders.

I like to find out what the girl's interests are. Chances are, I might know something about them myself, and then we will have something more to talk about. If I can find out what she likes doing, I get a good insight into her character and can also find out if we have anything in common.
I also find that music and films are great ice-breakers, because just about everybody (save hermits) has watched films or listened to CDs. Then it boils down to a matter of taste, and that can stimulate interesting chatter like nobody's business.
Travel is also a good thing, because everybody has either been somewhere, or desires to go somewhere. Interesting chatter can arise from what people think about places, and interesting experiences they may have had. Mutual friends too: then you can share amusing stories.

He is probably trying to be polite and not walk away. By looking around he is looking for an 'escape' route.
What does anybody talk about that interests them is the £64,000 question...you only find that out by knowing someone...there is no secret or art!
I would say, from a man's point of view, you find him more interesting than he finds you. Maybe, that is being harsh, but it sounds like it to me. Unattentive, looking around = bored!
Move on and find someone to talk to that shares your interests/activities more.

Not all guys have the same interests, so try to find out what interests this guy in particular, perhaps by spying, perhaps not. Also, let him start the conversation, or see what he likes to talk about with his friends. Theo out.

The quickest way to sus out anyone is to get them to talk about what interests them. Give your attention 100% even if they don't reciprocate. If they quickly bore you or brag too much or seem limited then cut and run.

Guys and girls are different in lots of ways and therefore have different interests. Most guys like sports, for instance and most girls like shopping. Most guys think the most important material possession is their vehicle (car or truck) where as girls will treasure a diamond ring. Girls like fashions and watching Desperate Housewifes. Guys like porn and watching porn. It's just the way it is. We have very little in common to actually talk about with women. You just have to understand that and govern yourselves accordingly.

Make him talk about himself and that'll keep him interested, constantly talking about yourself will have him checking out the wallpaper or the girl on the next table.
We've very simple creatures, food, beer, sex, sport and ego, nothing else.

1)Try to find out what interests him personally and ask about that
2)Talk about topical things to get the ball rolling(Saddam's death,the weather,anything in the local/national/international news,new movie/music releases,etc)
