Quality is subjective. I have a D50 and have printed as good prints as large as 16"x20" (something like 40cm x 50cm). I print a lot of 8"x10" photos and they are excellent.
The D50 is a great camera. Nikon is going after a lower price point with its D40 but that hardly makes the D50 obsolete. I'm up to almost 7,000 images and have learned more about photography in a year with the D50 than in the previous 20+ years with an assortment of cameras to include a Minolta SLR.
If you could swing the D80 then that would be a nice step up, but the D50 is still an excellent shooter.

d50 is obsolete now, the prints you will get wont be larger than a magazine size. That is OK for general use but if you need size you should go to the nikon website tho check the new models.

6mp cameras can print 2816x2112 dots (pixels). The general guideline for high-quality prints is that you print 300 pixels per inch, or 118 pixels per cm. That means about 24cm x 18 cm, or 9"x7". You can print at 240 dpi, and you'll find it to be just a tiny bit more granular. But you can print at just under 30cm x 22.5cm or 11.5"x8.5"

You could probably go 11"x16" (not sure of comparable size in cm) without too much degradation if you enlarge carefully
