Is it ok if the top row of my teeth is wider than my bottom? (braces)?

I'm really thinking about getting braces for the second time. I just want my top row expanded so when I smile you can see all my teeth. It just seems kind of narrow. Would that be ok? Or would I need to have them both expanded?

If you expand one arch and not the other, you will either have great difficulty chewing or not be able to chew at all!
