Tuberculoid leprosy symptoms are a few well-defined skin lesions that are numb. Lepromatous leprosy symptoms are a chronically stuffy nose and many skin lesions and nodules on both sides of the body. It usually takes about four years for tuberculoid leprosy symptoms to appear and about eight years for lepromatous leprosy symptoms to appear.

This is caused by Mycobacterium leprae and was found by Hansen in 1873. the onset of leprosy is insidious.the lesions involve cooler tissues of the body : skin, nose, pharynx etc neurologic disturbances are manifested by nerve infilteration and thickening, with resultant anesthesia, neuritis, trophic ulcers and shortening ot digits. this disease is divided in to two types. lepromatous and tuberculoid. in lepromatous leprosy, cell mediated immunity is markedlydeficient and the skin in infiltrated with suppressor T cells. and incase of tuberculoid, its non progressive, with macular skin lesions, severe asymmetric nerve involvement of sudden onset with few bacilli present in the lesions and it gives +ve result in lepromin test. leprosy can be treated with dapsone, rifampin for initial treatments and also minocycline.

SYMPTOMS
Numbness on some part of a body for very long period of time and it starts becoming darker black until it becomes senseless, later to show the infections,
Preventing disabilities ?
Leprosy control is about detecting, curing and finding people affected by the disease at an early stage before nerve damage and wear and tear lead to permanent disability.
With care, majority of the people with grade 1 disability, i.e., a loss of sensation, can lead normal lives. Prevention of disability programmes are designed to help people with problems such as numbness by enabling 'self care' and to prevent their limbs from eventually becoming unusable.
Rehabilitation ?
Rehabilitation programmes have been introduced with the aim of reducing the impact of disabilities on the social and economic life of the leprosy affected persons, and enabling them to undertake income-generating occupations to support themselves and their families. Various rehabilitation services are provided by the projects depending on the needs of the clients, their age, sex, work potential, skills and educational status. The societal acceptance and stigma also is a major determinant. Some of the activities undertaken as part of the rehabilitation programme are:
Old age pension
Maintenance allowance
Arrangement of loans from government and philanthropists
Arrangement of tools for self-employment
Student scholarships
Psycho-social counselling
Community based rehabilitation with the active involvement of the community
