For instance were the Jihadests justified when they resisted soviet influence in Afganistan, and if that was OK then why not resistance to American occupation.

I try to ask myself these questions when evaluating my stance with regards to the news. As an American Christian, and one who does not believe that aggresion is easily justified I ask myself these questions.

What do you think?

We should want to follow the example of Christ ......no?
When they came to get Jesus, the Bible says:
"...one of those with Jesus reached out his hand and drew his sword and struck the slave of the high priest and took off his ear. Then Jesus said to him: “Return your sword to its place, for all those who take the sword will perish by the sword. Or do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father to supply me at this moment more than twelve legions of angels?. . .
Matthew 26:51-53
It would seem that even in very critical moments armed resistance is not the answer.

There are just wars. The war against Hitler is one example. The Vietnamese struggle to unite their country is another despite ideology.
The examples you quote have more to do with cold war and post cold war politics.Saddam was useful during the cold war and after the Iranian revolution then became a loose cannon in the 90's and an embarrassment.
Was the war to oust him just?
Probably, but at what cost and to who's advantage? The Iraqi people?
I'd like to think so, but I don't.

It is more of a political statement. That is, it is about transferring power from one group to another.

It is hardly ever for the reasons espoused by the people stirring up the discontent.

Often the common man is worse off under the new regime than he was under the former.

Look at Iraq.

taking up arms with the intent to kill others for any reason is always negativity.

Just ask yourself what would you do if people invade your nation; your homeland; the place where you grow up and learn about life and all. Would you fight to protect your family, your land, your freedom, and your rights or would you just watch the invaders kill your beloved ones and your people and destroy everything you have much loved and cherished.

America has proven time and time again that their only interest in occupation is to free the innocent of aggression from evil forces. With a little cooperation, they get their country back in a much better shape than before. For example, we are spending billions in Iraq to rebuild their country.
