In layman's terms it is an inflammation of the cartilage in and around the rib cage area.Causes coughing, sudden impacts to the back area, even possibley sleeping in the wrong position for a long period of time.Anything that would make the combo of muscles & cartilage act in an abnormal way can cause inflammation & irritation.

Are you on antibiotics? If he thinks it's a bad infection, you should be being treated for such. You could have walking pneumonia, which will cause severe lung pain and difficulty breathing because of the pain. You could also have a pleural effusion, which means there is fluid between your lung and the outer lining of the lung; or pleursy, which is an inflammation of the lining of the lunf. That will also cause severe pain when you breathe. It could even be a blood clot in the lung, although that is probably not the case. You need to go back to the doc and tell him it is unbearable. If you have either of the above conditions, you need treatment. If those are ruled out, and it's muscle pain, he needs to give you something stronger for the pain. Are you taking something like Ibuprofen, which is an anti-inflammatory? It will work better than tylenol, if you have an inflammation. Don't try to tolerate or fix the pain yourself. Call the doc and insist you have another x-ray and be seen. Good luck.

Have you ever tried an anti inflammatory? A bad chest infection that won't go,what kind of answer is that? Try an anti inflammatory- high dose along with a muscle relaxer. Do not continue the pain medicine if it is not helping. In the long run there are many many problems associated with innocent pain relievers. Don't get involved! 1

"Itis" means inflammation. "Intercostal" means between the ribs. "Chondro" is cartilage.
It is a painful, but not dangerous, pain in the chest due to an inflammation of the cartilage (or sometimes muscle tissue) between the ribs. It often follows a bad chest cold or bronchitis, but can also occur on its own. ibuprofen, an anti-inflammatory, can help with the pain.
