As long as a patient has ONE carotid artery open, they can live a long, normal life with a completely closed carotid artery. The body can send blood to the brain through the open carotid artery as well as the vertebral artery system.
The blockage in the closed artery quickly becomes "set" and won't move.
When the artery FIRST closes, the patient may have a stroke or a TIA (mini-stroke).
Most vascular surgeons won't operate on an occluded carotid artery. The risk of causing a stroke from the surgery is very high.

Correct. Lack of oxygen to the brain immediately leads to stroke. If you experience a headache that is "the worst headache you have ever had", or have a loss of feeling or use in any part of the body, including numbness, you need to seek immediate medical attention. Other ways a carodid artery affects you is by damaging all of your major organs. The heart must pump blood efficiently through all of the major organs, and when they are deprived oxygen, they essentially begin to shut down. Your arteries carry oxygen to the brain, without that blood flow your brain will die. This is called a stroke and there are serious repercussions from not addressing it.
The procedure is relatively easy and recovery is almost 100%
If you or someone you know or love has this, they MUST get it the procedure done to prevent them from being severly brain damaged or worse yet dead.

The carotid artery carrys oxygen tot he brain. So it would get off the oxygen supply and quite possible lead to a stroke.

You would need a carotid artery bypass surgery to correct it. You could have a heart attack or a stroke.
