kirstyC has a well educated answer that SEEMS to be well thought out and correct. But there are rebuttles to her statements. For example, she states that women were never excluded from the priesthood. and blacks too. i think paul has many statements to say about women. One in particular was to be silent in the church. but because she does not allow email replies there is no way to get a real discussion.
As for Christ being the "ONLY" high priest! it is very obvious that her tradition have taught exactly opposite of Rev 21:7 says. Kjv.

As for Jeffs response. if he really wanted answers to his questions, he would give his email address. And while i agree it is sometimes better to Confess to God in personal prayer, Confessing sins to the priesthood has always been a practice of the church. it is the authority of those so ordained to bind and loose, to forgive and condemn and to Marry and divorce. The words of moses say to confess and to pay restitution. These are valid steps in repentance and showing works equal to the condition of contrition. But then again an unrighteous priest who practices unrighteous dominion is a greater evil to the process than if there were no priesthood at all

to jesinth, you are correct there are many duties of the priest included in the bible, but are they ALL listed? i dont think so. Is everyone a priest that calls themselves a believer? I dont think so. Although there is something to consider about what being CALLED truly means, and what it means to be "chosen". Not everyone that says LORD LORD with their lips follow Jesus and are chosen. NOT EVERYONE.

In response to KristyChristy,

We do not exclude women and children from the priesthood. Young men are given the Aaronic, or preparatory priesthood, at age 12 and given specific duties with that. Also, women and children are EXEMPT from the priesthood. As priesthood holders, our main responsibility is to give service to others (contrary to popular belief). Women and children have every right to all the blessings that the priesthood has to offer (given in blessings from the laying on of hands by a Melchezidek priesthood holder) without the responsibility.

Also, the High Priest you refer to is the office of High Priest in the Aaronic Priesthood, which currently is not active in our church. Through revelation from Joseph Smith, High Priest is an office in the Melchezidek priesthood.

To answer the real question here, priests are to teach, preach, and expound.

In the Old Testament, Aaronic or Levitical Priesthood was not received by ordination, it was inherited. Every priest was born an Israelite of the tribe of Levi and as a descendant of Aaron (Num. 3:6-12). LDS usually claim to be the tribe of Ephraim or Manasseh, which disqualifies them from having the "Aaronic Priesthood." LDS priests have never fulfilled the Old Testament duties of the "priests" or the "high priest" in offering sacrifices (Ex. 29:38-44; Heb. 5:1; 8:3). The Aaronic priesthood cannot be separated from those sacrifices.

But, even if LDS offered those sacrifices today, they would be of no value, because the Levitical or Aaronic Priesthood was replaced or superceded by Jesus Christ, the Great Eternal High Priest (Heb. 7:11-17; 10:8-21).

While Old Testament Priests functioned as mediators, Christ is now the only Mediator (Priest) between men and God (I Tim. 2:5; Heb. 7:24-25; John 14:6). The Aaronic priesthood actually ended at Christ's crucifixion when "the veil of the temple was rent in twain from top to bottom" (Matt. 27:50-51). That veil was 60 feet high and separated the "Holiest of all" from the "sanctuary" (Heb. 9:2-3). By tearing that veil, God symbolically declared that Christ's death gave believers direct access to God. They "enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus - through the veil, that is to say, His flesh" (Heb. 10:19-20).

In Old Testament days, there was only one high priest on earth at a time. Once each year He went into the "Holiest of all" to offer blood sacrifice for himself and for the people (Ex. 30:10; Heb. 9:7, 19-22).

In the New Testament church, Jesus Christ is both the High Priest and the sacrifice (Heb. 3:1; 9:11-12, 25-26). His body was offered once so there is no more sacrifice for sin (Heb. 7:26-27; 9:11-12, 26; 10:10-14). Because that work is finished (John 19:30), there is no need for a High Priest on earth! Christ, the only mediator and High Priest, is in heaven (I Tim. 2:5; Heb. 8:1-6).

The book of Hebrews repeatedly declares that Jesus Christ is the only High Priest after the order (manner) of Melchizedek (Heb. 3:1; 5:6, 10; 6:20; 7:11, 15, 17, 21, 24, 26; 8:1; 9:11). His "Melchizedek Priesthood" is "unchangeable" (literally "untransferable" or it "passeth not from one to another," Heb. 7:24). He did not get it from anyone nor give it to anyone. Because He lives forever (Heb. 7:25), He is consecrated for evermore (Heb. 7:28) as the Christian's only High Priest after the manner of Melchizedek (Heb. 7:15-17). Since Jesus Christ lives forever as our High Priest, there is no need for other high priests!

Christ is now the head of the body the church, even though He is in heaven! Jesus said, "All power (authority) is given unto me in heaven and in earth" (Matt. 28:18). If Jesus has it all, men do not have any!

All Christians are a "Kingdom of priests (Rev. 1:6) and possess a "holy" or "royal" priesthood mentioned in I Peter 2:5 and 9, which is neither Aaronic nor Melchizedek. It never exclude the ******* race like the LDS did until 1978. Nor does it exclude, women or children, like the LDS still do (Gal. 3:28; Acts 10:34; Rom. 2:11; 10:12; Eph. 6:9).

I hope you understand that biblically every believer is called to be a priest and a king just not of the Melchizedek order as the Levites were. I think you meant be harmless as a dove. Not getting into politics? Go into all the world means... the nerd world, the sport world, the political world etc... and is not really a geographical instruction only. A priests main job is to worship God. Secondly he is to serve man. If you are meaning a priest as in the vocation then they are called to oversee the flock but the term should be pastor.

Edit: I wrote than incorrectly - Thank you fassiacatt7 - we are priests of the Melchizedek order and not of the Levitical order.

Every believer is part of the royal priesthood (1 Pet 2:9) He is a priest and king (Rev 1:6). As priests we minister to and worship God on behalf of ourselves and others and make decisions on spiritual matters based on our knowledge of the Word. As kings we are to exercise Jesus' authority as King of kings and Lord of lords. All believers are called to be witnesses after they received the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8). In addition all believers are to discover and live out God's plan for their individual lives. We can be called to be a pastor, doctor, businessman, home-maker, etc in God's kingdom. All we have to do is to be like Christ in all we do to glorify Him and make Him known to the world.

Yes for every post they have some duties to do. But nobody is following God"s words. A father , a husband , a son, a servant, a wife and a king , every one has their own duties to do. All are in the Bible. But are we following it?

Where in the Bible does it state we should confess our sins to God through an intermediater aka priest. God can hear just fine, we don't need a go-between.
