As I believe as do many others it was an experiment that went out of control and spread. It is a miricle that I haven't contracted HIV as I have shared needles in the eighties and had sex with my husband (who died of AIDS in 1989). I telephoned the Terence Higgins Trust to see if they wanted to do tests on me to find out if I had something in my body that would not let the virus in. They weren't interested.

PLEASE get yourself re-tested! The strains of AIDS affecting Western Europe and the USA in the '80s did not transmit easily from men to women, except from dirty needles. Women were less susceptible to HIV1.

BUT, you don't know whether or not you are HIV positive. You could be carrying the infection, and it just has not developed into full-blown AIDS.

The pandemic is not killing itself off, because human hosts are so perfect for it. It can live as long as 30 years in a human being, without developing into AIDS. That person goes around for 30 years, infecting people, without knowing it.

ONE THIRD of inner-city African-Americans (of both sexes) are now HIV positive. 80% of Eastern European prostitutes (of both sexes) are now HIV positive.

Brazil announced, several years ago, that they are just going to violate the patents on drugs for HIV and AIDS, and make medicine available to their people, because their situation is so dire.

Central and Southern Africa are missing an entire generation. There are old people, and AIDS orphans, and everyone in between is dead or dying. Ditto India. Ditto China. That's a large chunk of the human population. There are problems in the 'Muslim world', but they don't talk about it.

Even if there were a cure, there couldn't be enough manufactured, in enough time, to be given away for free to all the people who are infected. NOTE: HIV positive is STILL a death-sentence. There are life-prolonging drugs, but those will eventually kill a person as surely as HIV will.

HIV strains 3 & 4 were mostly restricted to Africa and Asia, but not so much, any more.

The virus can mutate much faster than we humans can make drugs to treat the symptoms, let alone CURE it.

I have no idea whether it was a form of biowarfare that got loose (though it wouldn't surprise me), or whether HIV is just one 'Rainforest Virus' among many, which have emerged over the past 30 years.

There are at least two strains of SAIDS (Simian -- monkey -- AIDS) which were known to be airborne-infectious, by the early '90s. That's the biggest danger. So far, human HIV has been body-fluid-borne infectious. You couldn't catch it from being sneezed upon, or living with an infected person. SAIDS causes mild flu in humans. It's cross-species infectious.

I don't know where it came from, but I've spent most of my life around the Gay Men's community, and was an AIDS home-carer, before the disease had a NAME, back in the 1970s. I have studied infectious diseases, and done countless 'safer-sex' lectures, and stopped counting after the 200th person I knew died of AIDS (I was 19 then. I'm 45 now.) I have studied and followed this pandemic from New York City to South Africa to the Czech Republic.

It's not going away. We probably will not find a cure. It might become airborne. Then, my friends, there will be carnage that makes the Black Death look like a picnic.

On the other hand, more children die of MEASLES every year, in the world, than everyone combined, dies of AIDS.

Maybe you just dodged a bullet and were very lucky.

I've heard that some people were injected with malaria-infected monkey blood during trials in the 1950s and that is one theory as to how the virus crossed the sub-species barrier into humans.

Of course the Terrence Higgins Trust weren't interested in testing you. If they find a cure for HIV/AIDS, they're out of a job, aren't they?

here in America we only had 159 people as of august contracting measles 2013 and a total of 222 cases in 2011 no deaths. the deaths you talk about were in countries that don't vaccinate their children. there is no vaccine for hiv which is the reason why there were 49,273 new american diagnoses in 2011. that's a year dude almost 50,000 cases. homosexuals are the reason this thing is spread as 30,000 of those cases are just men doing whatever it is you call intimacy. it involves feces and destruction of delicate tissues of the body that never heal properly or can heal properly. the act alone destroys your immune system when sperm gets into another man it brings with it immune suppressing qualities so that a females body wont reject it. when it gets into another male it wreaks havoc on his immune system lowering his ability to fight infection in the first place making him more susceptible to acquiring hiv. your best bet for not getting hiv is to not engage in homosexuality. oh and by the way there are cases of hiv that go back long before anyone had a lab to create them in so that lab theory is bunk. but never trust the gov't anyway.

I just saw a documentary titled "The Orgin of AIDS" . It was incredible, I would recommend you check it out. It has an interesting theory to how it crossed over species & how it spread so quickly from then on.
