There is always the option of purchasing a murder mystery set that has already been created for your party needs. But if you are interested in creating your own it will take quite a bit of effort.

First off you will need to assign one person as the murderer and also assign all the other guests a role in this mystery. [example- you could have two investigators and all other people could be suspects]

Tell the guests when they arrive, what there role is. If you are going to have two investigators and multiple suspects, you will need to tell one of the suspects secretly that they are the murderer.

None of the investigators or suspects will know who the murderer actually is besides the murderer themself.

Before the party starts you will type up a small amount of information about what the suspects where doing the night of the murder. Each suspect will be given a different sheet. The investigators will question each suspect on what they where donig that night.

Now this is the fun part.
With the information that the suspects have they will try to persuade the investigators that they did not commit the crime. [this is great because the suspects make up huge entertaing stories] .

At the end of the questioning the investigators will go off and discuss who they think the murderer is. When they come back they will ask that suspect if they are the murderer [and in this version they will answer truthfully]. If they are not the murderer the investigators will go off once again and discuss posibilities of the people remaining.

This last step could be repeated multiple times. It all depends on how good your guests are at making up stories and persuading people.

I hope you consider this idea.

Good luck!

There is some really good information here: http://www.mydarksecret.com/HowToWrite/HowTo.html

While it mostly focuses on the Murder Mystery dinner party format, the information is applicable to most all mysteries.
