This is without doubt the best one on the Internet as it is based on Jim Breen's WWWJDIC. You may enter search requests in kana, kanji and romaji here.

Unfortunately, no dictionary will list "itara" as it is a conjugated form of the verb "iru" (one of the "to be" verbs). If you are looking for grammatically close English renderings of Japanese, you might have to put up with babelfish. If you want to find out more about grammar:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_grammar

As for the particle "mo", it is close to the English "and" or "too", but has other uses. Here are some examples:

1a) "both ... and (also)..."
この寿司屋は値段も安いし雰囲気もいいし、大好き。
kono sushiya-wa nedan-MO yasui shi, fun'iki-MO ii shi, daisuki.
= "This sushi shop is BOTH cheap AND has a good atmosphere, I love it!"

1b) "also"
青島都知事は作家としても知られていました。
aoshima-tochiji-wa sakka-toshite-MO shirarete-imashita.
"Governor Aoshima was ALSO known as an author."

2) "is it ok if..."
ここでタバコを吸ってもいいですか?
koko-de tabako-o sutte-MO ii desu ka?
= "IS IT OK IF I smoke here?"

....etc

If you say that freedict doesn't help, for what kind of a dictionary are you looking? That would be your first question to answer. Below should help you nail things down even more.

How much Japanese do you know? If you do not know both Hiragana and Katakana, I'd start there. That would allow

to help you greatly.

Kanji translation? That can become difficult unless it's actually written out with a word-processor because (to my knowledge) there is no way (program or method) for the computer to recognize the character. However:

If it's Kanji you must translate and you know Japanese, I'd try

If it's Kanji you must translate and you do not know Japanese, I'd try

I am only in my second year of studying Japanese, so I hope this helps you greatly. You are more than welcome to contact me for anything else you would want to ask/know and I'll see what I can do for you.

This is the site I've been visiting to study some basic Japanese it has a "Vocabulary" section (a sublink at the top, under the title panal) with an decent collection of English-Japanese words.

http://www.learn-japanese.info/indexw.html

I haven't gotten very far in learning Japanese, but I bookmarked a couple of lists form Dictionary.com for when I was ready to move on to more complex vocabularies... I can't say which links on these list are any good, since I haven't checked them out, but if Nihongo o Narau doesn't have the words you were looking for, at least you have more options to look through with these.

Dont allow your self to get everything so easy. take a trip to the book store it takes you two minutes to pick up a very good japanese dictionary for a very small price, and i do know you will appreciate it more you can take it with you anywhere you go.

"In order to view or search Japanese entries, your computer needs to be able to support Japanese text. Most current computers running Windows XP and Mac OS-X already comes with Japanese text input output capabilities."
