Keep it to yourself until people find out. THey will appreciate that you are not doing it as a stunt or a statment or a way to get attention. Nobody criticizes a vegetarian who doesn't tell people and make a huge deal about it. That includes making a big deal about the menu any time you get invited somewhere, or stressing out any time someone suggests going to a restuarant. Also if you decide it's not for you you will get way less criticism.
Just a few tips.

Just do it, if your friends make fun of you then they are jerks anyway. Its your personal choice and you should be allowed to do what you want. If they make remarks just remind them that they are eating dead animal flesh, and that and cows eat the same grass that they go to the bathroom on. I think being vegetarian is a really healthy choice, I have a few family members that eat that way and they are in shape and look better than the rest of us.

Why do you HAVE to tell them?? It's a choice you're making for YOU. Just order veg. dishes when you eat out, and if one friend happens to ask about it, then tell them.
It's not like you're joining a cult or something or having a sex change operation.
Really, nowadays, being a vegetarian is no big deal. I'm not one, myself, but when I get together with friends, I REALLY don't pay attention to what they are or are not eating. It's about spending time with friends.

Going vegetarian shouldn't impact your friends at all, if they are true friends. Real friends respect you for who you are and what your beliefs are and are supportive of your lifestyle....as long as you don't mind that they still eat meat :) Just come out and tell them, it shouldn't matter! Says a total carnivore who has a lot of veg friends.

It really wasn't a coming out for me... They just figured it out with the choices I was making.
My best friend joined me, after she questioned me on it... and the guy I was dating at the time (and proceeded to date for 2 years) joined me as well... Unfortunately he only kept it up for a few months after we split.
Everyone in my life has been very supportive, then again, I tend to be highly educated (and someone cocky) about my life choices and when I am faced with criticism and whatnot, I can quickly put nay-sayers in their place. :)

I just told them I was a vegetarian. They were cool with it but some of my new found friends roll their eyes. It's easier to tell friends you're closer to :) Congrats on becoming a veggie! :D

I never told my friends I am a vegetarian. I will tell them if they ask or if they find out somehow. If you want to tell them, just tell them you have decided to go vegetarian. I am sure they would respect your decision.
