Afraid? No.
Aware? Yes.
Herpes Simplex Virus 1 ( HSV1, or oral herpes -- aka 'cold sores') is ONLY infectious when symptomatic. If someone has the flaking, weeping, swelling, and so on, don't kiss that person on the mouth!
Also, don't share glasses or bottles with that person.
In fact, I wouldn't share a pillowcase with that person.
However, the HSV are dormant, much of the time. A little observation and forethought is all it takes, to keep from contracting either oral, or genital herpes.
It is very sad that the people who are infected do not know better than to offer to snog others, when they have weeping sores. We definitely need DRASTIC changes in our Sexually Transmitted Infections Education.
Are you afraid to cross the street because you might be run over by a car? No. You make sure no cars are present.

You are talking about type I oral herpes. Sorry, but about 80% of the population is positive for type I. Most of us got it when we were kissed by our parents or relatives when we were kids.
For most people it doesn't cause problems, and frankly you've got more important stuff to worry about on New Year's Eve than whether you have a 20% chance of getting herpes type 1 from somebody you don't know who may not even show signs of having a cold sore on their lip. Really!
Frankly, I'd be more worried about some drunk falling on me in a crowded New Year's Eve party. Or getting home safely from such party. Or whether some jack*** left an unattended cigarette lying around and there is a threat of fire.
Get real.

Are you talking about cold sores? These are passed to you when you are a child actually and lie dormant for some time. You may have it and not triggered it yet..... luckily I've never had a cold sore, but you silly doorknob it has nothing to do with kissing intimately. It actually passes from mouth into your body from kiss on the face somewhere, think doting grandparent more than rough old bint round the back of a club!

Herpes aside, why would you want to kiss a load of strangers?
Intimate acts should be reserved for people you actually care about, wouldn't you agree?
(And yes, herpes is no fun; so if that's what it takes to make people restrain themselves, then so be it.)

Cold sores are disgusting and you should certainly limit the amount of people you kiss on New Year's Eve. Some think cold sores are the cause of Alzheimer's Disease in later life.

When they come towards you, bend down like you've dropped something then scuttle away between the legs of all the people. Hide out of sight for a few minutes and then the danger will have passed. Good luck!
