NO. The biggest fallacy about STDs is that people think they can "tell if someone is clean by looking at them." It's funny because the people you might think look scummy or dirty may actually NOT be the ones harboring infections because they might go to the clinic more often than your typical suburbanite promiscuous teenager who likes to shop at Abercrombie.
While STDs do show characteristic symptoms like lesions and discharges, MOST OF THE TIME THERE ARE NO SYMPTOMS!
In short, you cannot sniff out a STD on a guy. Sometimes you can on a girl (for various vaginal infections), but usually not.
The only real way to determine whether a person has a STD is to go get tested and demand a copy of the results. The vast majority of us hope that we can trust our sexual partners enough to be honest with their sexual history including testing. But it's always a matter of preparedness and personal responsibility -- always use condoms and get full STD screens every 6 months.
btw, a Pap smear does not test for all STDs. You have to request a FULL PANEL or specific tests by disease (like HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, etc.)
ADDENDUM FOR CURIOUS FATHER: Wow, your answer is just so beyond the realm of reality that I really hope the asker has the sense to recognize in invalidity. Yes, some people have sensitive sniffers. I'm one of them. And yes, purpulent infections may be accompanied by certain odors, but they are no so distinct, nor readily detectable that someone can take a whiff and say "Whoa, that one there's got herpes!" It's socially irresponsible to suggest to people that the nanoscopic possibility that someone could smell gonorrheal discharge (which has NEVER been demonstrated in any kind of scientific literature -- and don't even bring animals into this, BESTIALITY is just sick) would be a valid means for determining a sexual partner's disease status.
The true and horribly deplorable fact is, people would rather smell for a STD than get tested for it. So let's not undermine DECADES of research, education, planning and program implementation encouraging people to get tested in be giving people the faintest idea that sniffing would be a good idea.
You probably didn't intend your answer to have such far reaching implications, but people do get their info from the internet and often don't know how to separate fact from fraud.
So for REAL WORLD APPLICATIONS, **NO** you cannot smell a STD.
As for syphilis, if a person is so far into tertiary syphilis that they exerience gumma, then sure, it might smell, but no different from what gangrene would stink. Tertiary syphilis at that advanced state is pretty damn rare in this day and age, even in really backwater countries.

off the cuff i'd say no... but then i would guess that an untreated gonorrhea syphilis would cause a smell ... other types also cause a discharge that i presume would have an smell.
the general rule is that you cannot tell a persons STD status by seeing ... this is especially true in the early stages... also a general rule is to assume that everyone is infected until you know for sure... please talk to your community health board or doctor... its a lot of info that you need to know.
.STD's.... dont get it... get informed

to say absolutely no would prolly be wrong. Some animals and some people smell things that are way outside the normal range of most humans.

particular, i have tasted my own. in case you opt for to attempt it, bypass for it. except you're really lengthy or limber, i does not propose attempting to drink from the tap... besides the actual undeniable truth that some adult men can try this. basically capture some on your hand and substances it a lick or slurp.
