We have Japanese students staying with us, and you can buy sushi rice in Australia, but they use medium grain rice in the rice cooker, and when cooked add the rice vinegar to the amount they want to form into rice balls. Easier way to roll(than with wet hands) They get cling wrap, sprinkle black sesame seeds onto it put large spoon of rice in middle, bring up sides of wrap, tapping botton on bench and twist plastic at top. Form ball and leave in, take out for lunch, undo, and formed ball ready to eat.

Use short grain rice. Kokuho Rose is a common brand found in supermarkets in the Asian food section. Cook it on the stove according to directions or use an electric rice cooker.
Rice balls or sushi can be shaped with a mixture of 1/2 c. vinegar, 2 T. sugar and 2-3 t. salt. Heat the vinegar gently until sugar and salt are dissolved, and sprinkle the mixture on COOLED rice to taste. You can cool the rice by spreading it on a baking sheet and fanning it

Jasmine rice is the correct answer. Sticky rice is used in certain Chinese dishes. The texture of the rice is totally different from Sushi rice, which is Jasmine rice.

It's not Sticky rice.
You can use Japanese rice imported from Japan but it's quite costly.
You can use Thai rice mixes with Sticky rice, it's cheaper.

I believe its a specific kind. I've seen it in the foreign food section of my grocery store. I'm sure its also how its cooked. I think if you go to the store looking for something called sticky rice you should find it.

Lily is incorrect. Vinegar does not make sticky rice sticky. It is the starch. The shorter the grain the higher the starch content.

It's a specific kind...its chubbier and looks like the stuff they put in beanie babies...its very roundish and clear..and when youre handling the rice, have your hands sort of wet with water so the rice wont stick as much.
