We just adopted a beautiful male dog from the shelter. He has not yet been neutered and he is marking his territory all over our house. (we have a couple of other dogs, all fixed) Our appointment to have him neutured until the end of January and my question is, will this spraying stop once he is fixed or does it seem like it will be an ongoing problem? He is estimated to be about 3 years old if that makes a difference. Thanks!

Now that we have had the dog for a few days, he has setlled down so much and bonded so well with the other animals that this is no longer a problem. He is of course still keeping his neuturing appointment, but at least he can be in the house in th meantime! Thanks to all you gave their answers and support.

Thank you so much for adopting! it should stop once his hormones decrease. however, you must make sure he knows that you dissapprove of this behaviour now. whenever you catch him in the act, loudly say "no!" and then ignore him for 3-5 minutes. also make sure to eliminate the smell by spraying where he has marked with a pet odour eliminator like neture's miracle, because otherwise he will just smell the spot and re-mark it. It is especially important to remove all traces of odour when he is neutered, so that he comes home to a non-smelling house.

I think that he will keep on doing it because dogs will do that when you take them for a walk.

Ask the vet. But if the dog continues , I would just train the dog not to mark his territory in the house. Just like you would teach him not to go to the bathroom in the house.

I don't know much about male dogs . I have four female dogs.

You should wait for another answer. The cool thing about this site is a veterinarian might see this question.

When dogs are neutered when they are young then 9 times out of 10 this stops BUT at 3 years old there is a good chance that this has become a habit, and neutering wont do you much good for this problem! Sorry good luck!

You need to crate train him. He will "mark" his area because of the other dogs, so you need to provide him his "own" area. He also may not have been housbroken, in which case the crate training will help housebreak him.

The neutering sometimes helps, but don't rely on that. Anyway, a month is too long to mop up after him. :>)

If you clean up the urine markings really well with a non-ammonia cleaner then after he is neutered he will not mark his territory again. You need to get rid of the scent where he marked before.
