Normal pap smears really don't say anything about the absence or presence of the HPV virus. The only way to know if it is 'gone' is to have a blood test. I have to tell you that it is extremely rare for someone who has been infected to no longer BE infected...and unable to transmit it. The signs and symptoms can be absent during times of remission...but a complete absence of the virus is most unlikely.

Did your doctor do the HPV DNA test on you? That can tell for sure whether the virus is still present in your cervical cells. I think that if your immune system has fought it off, and your doctor has told you that you are no longer contagious, then you don't need to tell. But keep in mind that 75-80% of the sexually active population have this virus, and there are so many strains of it. Just because you have had one strain doesn't mean you can't get another. I would recommend using protection until you are certain that the boyfriend you are with is going to be long-term and monogamous. And I agree with another poster, you may want to get the new HPV vaccine to protect against some of the other strains.

Congratulations on the four years of normal Pap smears! That is wonderful news and I'm sure it takes a load off your mind. Best wishes to you.

I have been through the same thing. If you only had HIGH-RISK HPV (the one without the warts) and your paps are coming back normal...you dont have to tell anyone. You cannot transmit it.

Remember, this is such a common thing that you might even get it again since many men are carriers. It is estimated that over 80% of women will have HPV in their lives!!

Congrats of the normal pap smears...your fine now. You dont have to tell anyone or have any guilty feelings.
