Rapid weight loss, increased thirst, increased urination(hard to tell cos u drinking so much), breathe had a strange sweet smell ..... take him to the GP and do a checkup. Normally a blood glucose test should clear things up and you'll know. Its pretty quick. Just make sure he hasn't just drunk a can of coke or had food. Test should preferably b done on a empty stomach or 2 hours afta food.
Other tests such as a glycosylated hemoglobin takes too long.

I posted a question on here yesterday regarding my son. We noticed that he was drinking a lot more than normal. He was also up a lot in the night, sometimes wetting the bed which was not normal for him as he was 4 at the time and not wet the bed for a few years. We took him to the doctors (got an appointment straight away) they took a urine sample and tested with a strip which the doctor told me he had a high sugar count so virtually told me he was diabetic. I then went straight to A&E where they confirmed it with a blood test. Totally turned my life around within 6 hours.

Typical symptoms of diabetes in children are: 1) increased thirst, 2) increased urination, and 3) increased appetite, often associated with weight loss. A simple urine test will show glucose and ketones in the urine. The the time from onset of these symptoms to the development of diabetic coma may be very short, often six weeks or less, so seek medical attention promptly! Type II diabetes has a slower onset, and is seen more these days in obese children. Both types of diabetes are treatable.

with children you have to go to a doctor. If a aduld becomes diabetic the effects develop slowly, in kids they just stop making insulin and go into a hypo soon even a coma.
all kids with few exceptions who get diabetic get insulin dependant diabetic, ie insulin shots for the rest of there life.
the test for diabetic is called glucose tollerance test, you get your blood glucose tested then given high sugar drink and tested again to see if the blood glocose has gone up by 1 or 2 or if it went up by10 or 20 . this is done by a doctor or nurse.

The doctors take a small sample of blood by doing a finger poke...if you are diabetic...the meter will read higher than 200 if you are not it should be between 70 an 130.

DO NOT RELY ON THE CHEMIST'S FINGER PRICK TEST! This will only give a sugar level at that particular time. If he's just finished a chocolate bar, the results will not be a good indicator. You need to go to your doctor and he will do a HB1C blood test which will give an overview of sugar levels over a period and determine if he has a problem.

They run a 5 hour test on you, you drink this real sweet syrupy medicine and come every hour and drank it again . Then they take your blood and it will show up if you are a diabetic. I think a blood may show witout all that mess but that is the way I see it done.

There are several ways, local chemists can test them but if you are concerned they will probably advise you to go to the local doctor for blood tests once or twice so they can monitor the sugar in your childs blood sugar level and if they are undecided then they can also monitor their diet or there are other tests like wee tests each day in a morning etc.

Um, I'm the child in this case, but my mom told me that I wasn't eating alot, I couldn't keep down solid foods, I was tired/sluggish and I went to the bathroom all the time. Prediagnosis is also similiar to a stomach flu, menaing that your child may be vomitting or feeling sick to their stomache.
I guess that the easiest thing to do is to take your son/daughter to teh hospital and have their BG checked there.
