I've bought these from Fox's Spices before, who do mail order.

Not sure what West Cumbria is like, but Devon's a bit rural too.
If you can find (and i appologies for any offence) an ethnic minority newsagent they often stock ingredients for their food.
For example there's a shop in my (reasonably large) town, the owner is a shik (from Pakistan i think) and I know he would have these in.
Its where i go to get my spices as well. Big bags at good prices.

Sorry its only general advice, but find the corner shop and thats where you will find ingredients like the lime leaves and 'exotic' spices.

Try the biggest supermarket.

If you can't find them, you can always improvise.

Galingal is similar to ginger and lime leaves - I'd try grated zest of a citrus fruit or perhaps some lemon juice.

I first came across galingal in a seventeenth century recipe. I'm sure the writer would have used somthing else if her usual spice were unavailable.

If you like shopping on-line try www.spiceworld.uk.com. They are absolutely brilliant for herbs, spices and all sorts of related things.
They list both galangal and kaffir lime leaves.

Try Tesco's, Sainsbury's or Waitrose

Sainsbury's tends to be pretty good for these types of things, I made a thai curry recently and managed to get all the ingredients from there. I'm assuming you do have a Sainsbury's there!?
Good luck.

i would think you'd have to go to Carlisle for something like that... not sure of many specialist places in Cumbria for things like that... and even then i'm not sure you'd have much luck with galangal... you might need to go to Preston!
