cold sores on the lip are a very common type of herpes called herpes simplex 1 genital herpes is called simplex 2 even i have herpes 1 more than half of the population does that includes children who have never even been sexually active however if you have a group of cold sores around the mouth you should see a doctor asap and yes you can get or give someone genital herpes if you have a cold sore present and you have oral sex because the virus is present in your body but for herpes 1 which is just a regular common cold sore try abreva it costs about 15 dollars though so the cheapest way is to try and dry it out with toothpaste or something and remember don't get scared its common just don't kiss anyone for about four days after it goes away good luck.

The best thing I have EVER tried for cold sores and it really works is Lactinex pills. Ask your pharmacist. They keep them refrigerated and you do not have to have a prescription to buy them. Start taking them at the first tingle of an approaching cold sore, and sometime it won't even go ahead and form! The second best thing I have ever tried is Acidophilus. It takes a little longer to work, but does work. I don't know why these things work, only that they do. I think there may be something in them that suppresses the herpes virus in the body. I have heard that apple cider vinegar applied topically helps dry out the sores and speed healing, but I have not had a cold sore since I heard that so I have not tried it yet.
I don't know if cold sores can turn into genital herpes.

If the "cold sore" or "fever blister" on your mouth is caused by a strain of the herpes virus (and not all of them are), although the virus doesn't "turn into" genital herpes, per se, the infection can be transmitted to the genital area, typically by oral-genital contact.

The distinction between HSV-1 and -2 (the two main strains of the herpes virus) is largely academic these days. Once upon a time, HSV-2 was "oral" and HSV-1 was "genital." Not nearly as much anymore. BOTH strains can infect either the oral or genital areas.

Stay on the safe side. Make sure you are well-hydrated, get plenty of rest, take some Lysine (a supplement available at most drug stores and large grocery stores), and put some Abreva on your cold sores. As you well know, they should clear up in a few days. Until they do, however, wash your hands often, and refrain from kissing anyone. Also, don't engage in sexual activity, oral or otherwise. Herpes is highly contagious, and you don't want to infect your partner's oral or genital areas, or your own private parts - which CAN happen.

Yes, there isn't any. Herpes is caused by a virus. Actually, there is little cure for viruses nowadays. The only thing that you can generally do in the case of a viral infection is strengthen the immune system and hope it fights it off. Not with Herpes, the immune system can't win against it. Thus you only get to treat the symptoms. Once you're infected, it stays with you for life. So don't get infected.

Personal experience. I have had genital herpes for over 5 years.

yes, it is herpes simplex 1. It can't turn into gential herpes and it doesn't even have to be sexually transmitted but beware because the strands of the virus don't always show up where they are suppossed to. Performing oral sex on someone while you have a cold sore can transmit to your partners genitals (although on the genitals it is still considered herpes simplex 1).

Yes, Herpes Simplex I (also known as cold sores). Herper Simplex II is genital herpes and yes, if you were to perform oral sex on a person your simplex I can be transferred to the other persons genital region.
Just because you have H.S. I doesn't mean you have genital herpes, someone could have simply kissed you as a baby who had a 'cold sore' and gave it to you.
