My parents both have this disease. Oral meds are more likely to cause weight gain. Insulin in the proper dosage keeps the patient on a more even keel. However, that depends on your eating habits and whether you exercise daily.

Does your endocrinologist have a nurse dietitian on staff? If not, call your local hospital for a referral. This person specializes in proper food management for diabetics. He/she can give you sample diets which are tailored to your body.

the best way, actually, is to ask your doctor for the calorie count and a diet sheet for a target weight. You shouldn't starve your body to lose weight. Being diabetic you will already have a sense of what you can and can't eat. So maintain that diet and then find an exercise that you can do easily and then do it for a half hour every day. Lift a kilo bag of dried beans or rice or a heavy food can. Do twenty lifts on a side. Ride a bike, or walk stairs, or go around the block. Take it easy and have your quick pack of sugar or a cheese snack for your weak and dizzy moments. If you have one make sure your glucose pen is with you. But basically it's keeping in mind that quick weight loss may be dangerous to you. Make sure, and ask the doctor.
