When germs that cause colds first infect the nose and sinuses, the nose makes clear mucus. This helps wash the germs from the nose and sinuses. After two or three days, the body’s immune cells fight back, changing the mucus to a white or yellow color. As the bacteria that live in the nose grow back, they may also be found in the mucus, which changes the mucus to a greenish color. This is normal and does not mean your child needs an antibiotic.

A cold is a mini infection - the kind of "snot" actually tells you what kind of infection it is cos its a mixture of the microbial toxins and the anti-toxins that your body produces.

Viral infection makes you produce watery nasal discharge.

Bacterial infection makes you produce yellowy-greeny mucousy nasal discharge - or snot!

the mucous secretion of the nose increase after infection, furthermore the epithelial cells (the cells that produce the mucus) can destroyed by the immune system.... the accumulation of cell debris (own cells and the unvaders) will cause the creation of pus that will be mixed with mucous... rendering its color yellow and then green... depending on the level of inection and the immunity

The yellow is pus mixed in with the mucus. It is because of the infection.

It's because of infection. If it turns green, get to a doctor and on some antibiotics. If this is neglected, it could turn into pnuemonia. Take care and watch the color, it's no joke.
