well, you don't want to drink any alcohol before you get it done because you will bleed more due to thining out your blood and too much blood will push out ink and it will frustrate your artist, trust me. even though this sometimes happens naturally, there is no point in purposely enhancing it.
tylenol is safe to take, but no aspirin or ibuprofin, they also thin blood. lidocain is sometimes made available, it is a topical anaesthetic but is expensive and the bottom line is, a lot of people believe you should earn your tattoo. the pain is part of the experience. and the pain is really not all that bad. just breathe and relax.
i am a skinny guy and i just recently got my ribs tattooed. it goes from right under my armpit all the way down to my hip and it reaches a quarter of a way to my back and peeks out on the front side of my body. i always tell everyone that comes into the shop worried about pain, if i can take it anyone can. while this is not entirely true because everyone has a different pain tolerance, it helps put them at ease and 90% of the time they come out of the chair saying the tattoo didn't hurt that bad.
start off small if that helps, and in a less painful spot, like your upper arm. of course you should get the tattoo where you want it and make sure it's what you really want, but if you plan on getting a lot of tattoos, then starting off in one certain spot can't hurt (no pun intended)
good luck with everything!

I had two done on my ankle, and for about the first 5 minutes, it felt like I was being stung repeatedly. After that, it sort of went numb, and didn't hurt anymore. I've heard that different areas of your body will vary in the degree of pain felt during a tattoo, so I guess it depends on where you're getting it. I didn't need anything, and it honestly wasn't that bad. If you're nervous about it, don't feel bad, I was too! And, if you honestly think that you might need something to get through it, maybe you could ask whoever's giving you the tattoo, if they can recommend anything. I'm sure they've seen other people go through the same thing at some point in time, so they would probably know better than anyone. Good luck on your first tattoo!

My suggestion is that if you need pain killers or something similar to get a tattoo, don't get a tattoo. Part of getting a tattoo is being able to take the pain. Besides some tattoo artists will not work on someone is high on pills.

Don't take anything! They may refuse to work on you, as others said. Also, the pain really doesn't last long, and it's more of an annoying feeling than pain. If you happen to have a really low pain tolerance, I suggest a small tattoo for your first, to make sure it's not too bad.

You don't need painkillers! If you want a tatt that bad then you should be willing to deal with the pain....If you take any kind of pain killer it could thin out your blood and you would bleed more than usual so don't take anything! The pain is temporary but the tatt is permanent so don't be baby and be willing to suffer a little for some awesome artwork!

Don't take anything before your tatt. The best thing you can do is have something light to eat and have a bottle of water handy during. If the pain gets to be too much, ask your artist to stop and have a bit of a breather. Take calming breaths and go for it. Afterwards, take the lowest dosage recommended of Tylenol or Advil. You'll be fine though, the pain is soooo worth it!

just take the pain. i have had many many many hours of tattoo and i have only used a pain killer once and it really didn't make much of a difference, except that i didn't care that it hurt. just deal with the pain and it will be something else to add to the wonderful memory of getting a tattoo. the pain really is worth it.

FYI any kind of pain meds while getting tattooed will irritate you more, and hurt more, and may even bleed more. The only thing i suggest is staying calm and possbily having someone with you to take your mind off the pain. its not an unbearable pain. If you want a tattoo you got to suck it up and bite the bullet. if you dont want to experience the pain, than dont get tattooed

Getting a tattoo doesn't hurt that bad, especially not enough for pain killers. My advice is to not take anything.

Don't be a wuss! One of the points of getting a tattoo is the pain! That's the first thing people ask, too... and what are you gonna say "I slept through it all cause I was too chicken to take the pain"?? Huh?? The more it hurts the more you'll love it.
