It's not that "African Americans" have HIV/AIDS. In Africa and a lot of other places it's a lot easier to get HIV/AIDS. Just because your skin is black, doesn't mean that you're going to get it.
Although, you could get it genetically depending on how distant your relatives are that lived in Africa.

I am extremely disturbed that you would post a question like this to be seen by others besides african americans such as white, only to not have the proof or backup your information that has longed plagued our community so they can once again take this information and run with it, therefore creating another stereotype.
I indeed believe there is a problem. We all know there has been an epidemic on the rise in Africa. There are about 8 countries that the vast majority of the pop has AIDS, these are poor countries, that do not have the medicare and most importantly education on how not to spread it and what it exactly it is this has been going on for over 20 years. As far as the US that is separate epidemic and nothing to do with the spread in the US. It it being spread the most umong the gay community (the men) because there are still so many leading double lives and the DL men spreading it to the women they sleep with. And we still don't have concrete information that there is an epidemic of DL passing it on. It is not only immuned to the gays but if a woman gets it, somewhere down the line i believe it was passed through 2 men somewhere in the chain of that womans sexual partners. But you can't believe everything you hear, sometimes you have to consider your sources(who's reporting the information, and what studies are done on non-african americans because there are always studies on diseases etc being tested in minority communities. But if it does exist within our community more excessively than others, then once again i find it hard to believe certain races only experience the extreme of diseases, poverty, and violence (not just african americans)

The African American community has long been in denial about AIDS, considering it only a "Gay" disease. For this reason, it's spread much more quickly than it would have.

p.s. With reference to a previous answer - There are Africans and African Americans - these terms are not synonymous. African American isn't the same as black. Millions of blacks live in Africa - they are not American, so are not African American.

Actually some African Americans in Africa believe that if you have AIDS, to be cured you have to sleep with a person who isn't infected with the STD. Then it ends up spreading. We did this in our health class and researched it. And they actually think it works. Just get tested if you are worried.

Unfortunately a lot of African Americans do not pratice safer sexual practices and put themselves at an increased risk for HIV and other STDs. That's why alot of attention is being put on HIV prevention amongst that specific community.
