People are generally very contagious in the first couple of days they have the cold/flu. If during that time they visit you're at risk. A flu shot and vitamins will help, but not eliminate.

Hopefully your visitors will be polite and sneeze into a tissue and wash their hands often etc.....

While some viruses are airborne you will catch a lot by touching something they have touched and then touching your nose or something like that.

So wash your hands often with anti-bacterial soap and also have an anti bacterial spray by your kitchen facuet and bathroom sink - so you can spray the facuets and any other parts they may touch, like door handles or shower heads etc....

Yes, they will pass the viruses on to you. Note: Cold and flu are caused by different viruses. Both viruses survive more than 1 day; the flu can survive for almost a week; the cold virus can survive for years!!!

People with flu should STAY HOME and not visit you!!! Although many people are not aware of it, almost 1 million people die every year from the flu. However, no-one has ever died from the common cold.

The best thing to do is to assume every one is infectious. Therefore wash your hands especially when in communal areas where people cough and wipe their nose and god knows what else. .Avoid touching railings and doors or use the back of your hand. I have a bad habit of putting my hands to my mouth or rubbing my eyes. Some viruses are deactivated almost as soon as hitting a surface (HIV) others persist longer. A virus can replicate, but whether it's alive or not is debatable Eat onions , garlic, and ginger root which have antiviral qualities - they boost your immune system. Get your flu shot .

Influenza viruses on fine aerosolized droplets have been shown to travel up to 160 feet in a closed room. How long the virus remains infectious, though, depends on the humidity. The more humid the air, the longer the virus remains infectious. A meter away is like French kissing her.
