could be gastro-esophageal reflux disease. He could also have a hiatal hernia. Anything carbonated, like beer, will make the problem worse. If antacids like maalox do not help the problem, he should see a doctor for stronger meds to decrease the amount of acids he produces and thereby reduce the back splash into the esophagus that causes heartburn.

Your husband has a faulty flap in his stomach which is suppose to close after eating but stays partially open allowing acid from the stomach to enter the esophagus (throat). He needs to reduce his intake of acidic foods (citrus fruits, alcohol etc.) and maybe begin drug therapy other than antacids, he should try nexium and try sleeping with a few pillows under his head to not allow too much acid to reflux at night. Hope this helps.

Faulty digestion! Here is a quick fix help, if you care to try, it will not erase the cause which is faulty digestion which is also fixable but not here and not today. One glass of water maybe 10 oz. 3 tablespoons of vinegar and 2 teaspoons of baking soda powder, the kind used to keep your fridge fresh. Mix and you will see a chemical reaction, once it is over, tell him to drink, and he will be releaved of heartburn for the time being. Good luck!!

sounds like acid reflux. I think his is serious and needs the attention of a doctor. I get acid reflux occasionally, and take Pepsid 150 and it works well.
