I have had pneumonia before and all I can say is this: anyone who gets it has a propensity because they have a weakened respiratory system. Mine started when my dear sweet mother could not stop smoking when she carried me. People don't believe it, but smoking during pregnancy does, indeed have more than an effect on the weight of a baby. The funny part is, I didn't discover any real upper respiratory problems until I moved to Tennessee. All hell broke loose - I had sinus infections every year for 5 years! Allergies to mold and mildew developed. I had to move out of my house I bought because of the mold and mildew. It was literally killing me! Then asthma attacks began. If I get a cold, it's never just a cold - it continues for weeks into upper respiratory and I have to be so very careful to have my inhalers present at school (I teach) and at work. One year, because I didn't come down with anything - I thought I was 'healed' and I stopped using my inhalder, and my peak flow meter (it measures how much air you can breathe out at a given time - when it's below a certain point, you have some idea that you need to use inhaler more) I spent 3 years - every year in the hospital! This is the first year that I didn't spend Christmas in the hospital - but I still had an attack. I was better prepared even though I still went to emergency and had to have breathing treatments, steroids and shots to calm me and help me breathe. Recently, James Brown, the famous Godfather of Soul,-Singer died of pnenumonia. Now - just think about it - a person who is a quadrapalegic has an even harder time because they are hindered because of paralysis. Pneumonia can kill. Quads have even more to be concerned about because being able to breathe through the tubes, which must always stay clean and clear, is difficult enough. Any kind of cold, or flu can kill this person. I am not sure why you asked, you did not provide a great deal of details, but I would caution you or anyone who knows or is a quad - to be extremely careful about colds, flu and even being around people who have them.

pneumonia can be fatal to a quadriplegic if medical help is not given. Because they do not have the same muscle control to cough and to move around to keep the lungs cleared out.
