A few weeks ago I had a hard BB size ball inside my labia area. It was very painful and the outside labia was blackish purple in color around that area. It almost felt like when you get a pimple inside of your ear lobes. it went away in a couple days. Now I have another one on the other side, not dark in color, but still very painful. Could this be herpes or a cyst?

Given the bilateral nature of your symptoms, you might have suffered infections to your Bartholin Glands. There are two of these glands, which are located on the insides of the labia majora, and which secrete a mucous-like lubricative substance, often (but not always) during sexual arousal.

At any rate, these glands can get blocked and infected, resulting in pain, swelling, redness/discoloration and hardening of the tissues - a boil, essentially. Sometimes, the blockage and infection will resolve without treatment. However, even if the symptoms *seem* to resolve, the condition could recur, and/or the infection might not have been eliminated. If the infection is serious enough, a hard, painful cyst can form. Even if symptoms improve, such a cyst, when left untreated, may have to be surgically removed - along with the gland itself, which is no fun at all.

Also, hair follicles and pores on the labia themselves can get infected, and can result in a boil, which might go away on its own, or might have to be lanced (ouch!).

Regardless of whether you get better or not, go see a doctor. Obviously, if your symptoms are the result of an STD, you need to know. If not, you should ensure that the condition has resolved, and find out whether you should take precautions against future infection. Specifically, get in to see your OB-GYN as soon as possible. Doesn't matter if he/she is busy - they'll fit you in if you have an acute complaint. Don't mess around with the ER or your regular family doc (unless required to do so by your health insurance) - you need to see a specialist.

This sounds like what is known as a chocolate cyst. Very common in women. Cleanse the area, and do not try to express it. You need to see your doctor to get this treated. It is very painful. It is a cyst, more than likely, but see the doctor anyway to rule out anything else. Be safe, take care of yourself, and see the doctor. You may need antibiotics, but discuss with the doctor.

I am absolutely terrified and I feel so alone. I just found out last week that I tested positive for hsv1 and 2. I have been with the same man for the past 10 years and within the last year found out that he has cheated on me with numerous women. I am so scared that I can give it to my children by kissing them and them eating with me...I feel like my whole life has changed. And even though the nurses, my doctor, and websites say that a lot of people have it I still feel like I am by myself. My self esteem has dropped and I feel like I have been used up. But now, My life is very happy.

If it were herpes, you would notice a small cluster of blisters, not just one hard sized ball. Also it would have had a lot of itching prior to the pain.

Sounds like a possible boil or pimple. See your doc to find out what is going on and what is causing these.
