the key is to hold your breath for as long as possible. most home remedies just provide great distractions from noticing your breathing so you DO hold your breath....like drinking an entire glass of water slowly but without stopping to take a breath

This one I know because my father's dad was a dr.
It may sound bizarre but here it is....take a paper bag just big enough to fit over your head. Take your hands and tighten it
at the neck so no air gets in. Take exactly 10 deep regular
breaths and release the bag. You will feel light headed for a
few seconds which is normal. Wait a minute as your system
is adjusting and if the hiccups resume....repeat the action.
Hiccups are caused by too much oxygen in the blood system.
You are introducing more carbon dioxide to offset this condition.
Trust me....it works. My children have learned this technique and know it works. Let me know if it works for you.

This happened to my husband and he finally took a muscle relaxer and they went away. They are prescription only, but maybe you have some from something else or know someone who does. Just take one and see if it works. Flexeril is what he took. All those home remedies don't work, you just look foolish standing on your head and drinking water while bending over and it does not stop the hiccups. You can try taking a teaspoon of sugar. I know people who swear by that, but I have never had it work for me, but its worth a try and can't hurt.

DO NOT DRINK WATER!!! I personally witnessed someone die from drinking too much water when they had the hiccups for 2 days. Part of the water came back up and then they aspirated (inhaled the water) it and drowned. GO TO THE ER IMMEDIATELY!!! The hiccups can actually be life threatening. There is a shot that you can be given to stop them.

I have heard that breathing into a paper bag held around your mouth is supposed to help. Also, if you can get someone to sneak up and scare you by saying "Boo" is supposed to help. I think laying on your back and breathing in to a count of three, holding it for a count of three, and releasing it to a count of three might help to relax your esophagus which is having spasms (hiccups).

I've heard it said that if you take two pieces of straw from a straw broom and burn both ends of each piece and cross them in a t over your soft spot (middle of your head) that this will stop it. Also, did you know that chronic hiccups can be a symptom of helicobacter, the stomach germ that causes gastric cancer.

Drink some water and I know that some people might get offended. So go into another room and force some burps out until they are all gone. Good Luck :).
