Why am I getting brown vaginal discharge?

I am NOT on birth control or even sexually active [I haven't been for two years now]. It had a smell as well but not overly so...just not normal. I'm supposed to start my period soon and I'm concerned about this. ANY insight will be appreciated. Thanks.

Usually brown is from old blood,you should get a check up because you should not have a smell.
