I think aspartame has saved my life. After being diagnosed, I would not have been able to adjust my diet so quickly without artificial sweeteners. My habits are getting better, but every once in a while I still crave a soda. I'm glad they make so many sugar free items.
Also, I agree with above poster: Aspartame is a protein. It can't harm you any more than any other protein, unless you have PKU. All proteins are instantly broken down into their amino acids by the HCl in the stomach (except of course for proteins designed to work with HCl).

No. Aspartame is a combination of two protein building blocks (ie, amino acids) and that it's very sweet was a considerable surprise. Since there's no glucose in it, it won't raise blood glucose levels when absorbed. Doesn't taste quite like sugar which is an issue, and it doesn't cook quite the same way, but othersie has nothing much to do with diabetes.
The problem with aspartame is for those with a rare inherited inability to handle one of the amino acids involved. Whatever its source (ordinary protein (eg, meat or fish or ...) or aspartame) its' dangerous to these folks as they can't handle it. Too much causes severe heazlth problems up to and including brain damage. That's why you will sometimes see warnings on labels: "Phenylketonurics, this product contains phenylanaline". Such people should stay away from it, including aspartame.
There have been no other reports of consistent affects for any population from aspartame.

I am writing to tell you what an incredible impact these methods had on my life! I have had type 2 diabetes for 27 years. For me, the worst part of this horrible disease is the severe pain I constantly get in my feet. The pain is so bad that I avoid standing and walking as much as possible. I've got to tell you that within the first month, my feet stopped hurting altogether and I can now walk totally pain free.
Believe it or not, I even danced at my niece's wedding last month, something I have not done in a many years. I've been following the book for six months now and my blood sugar is well within normal range. I feel great!
I recommend you use the Type 2 Diabetes Destroyer to naturally reverse your diabetes.

So i actually know a lot about Aspartame.
Its really bad for you for a few reasons. First, it is completely chemical so your body doesn't quite know how to process it. Second, its been shown in two studies that it actually alters brain chemistry (kinda scary). Third, it actually increases your appetite (how ironic, since it's widely used in diet drinks). Finally, research in labs has shown that though its hard to pinpoint the negative effects of its use now, when doses equal to average lifetime use for humans were administered to rats, it was found that their offspring had health issues directly related to Aspartame. This means that its use will not only negatively impact you, but it will also have an effect on your children. Even if you don't believe any of this, its still not a bad idea to avoid it (you really dont have to try hard). That way, you're avoiding the risk all together.

God I hope not ..I too have been told this but i asked a researcher if it was dangerous and he said that you would have to eat a room full everyday for it to amount to anything..but friends have told me all kinds of vicous things about using it and i have read on the internet more than I want to know..They say that splenda and stevia or the best with little or no side effects.. Pesonally I don't like either of these but will use them in a crunch..I doupt it about the diabetes thing.. that doesnt sound right but who knows in this society everything will kill you if you like it.. and well there is always that bus.. that can come along and take you with it.. and same results..i wouldnt really worry about it..I have been using it for about 10 years and its not done anything to me..and well I think sugar is more deadly than any artifical sweetners..

Every answer previously stated says it really bad for you and one even claims it raises blood sugar. Of course it hard to believe any of them because they all based on rumor, how long has aspartame been out? That is how long I have used it and you will get hit by a car, die from a heart attack, or die from worry, before any present sweetener will kill you. They aren't steroids.

Aspartame has been the subject of a vigorous public controversy regarding its safety and the circumstances around its approval.

I don't truly know for sure if aspartame based sweeteners are dangerous. There are other sweeteners that do not contain aspartame. You may want to ask your doctor.

Aspartame is not a good sweetener. If you want to die quicker then don't consume it! It causes all kinds of illnesses that people die from.
