My word these are some depressing answers. I wasn't going to answer the question because for one I am not diabetic myself and two my husband who is, is only 29. After seeing the answers you have received I think I need to. Most people have a very depressing view about type 1 diabetes, although it is a difficult disease to live with it doesn't have to be a death sentence. My husband has been diabetic for almost 12 years now - he has no diabetes related complications. Although his control has gone up and down over the years he has never completely slacked off. Tight control is key, you have to take care of yourself. Taking care of yourself doesn't mean completely laying off sugars and carbs it means moderation. The crazy thing is that diabetics really need not do more than the average people should do themselves. Of course I stress should do because most of us over indulge and don't treat our bodies as we should.
I believe that at 40 my husband will be in the same place he is now, without complications. As long as he continues to take care of himself he will be fine. Yes diabetes may shave a few years off his life but as long as he continues to maintain tight control he should be able to retain his eyesight, feeling in his extremities and maintain functioning organ (ie kidneys, heart).

I agree with Coutney.... These answers are from type 1's who did not take care of themselves.
I have been a diabetic for 35+ years. A gift from my mother who has had it for 60 + years. I watch my levels, exercise, yes, it is tough, but you have to do it. You brush your teeth every day and you shower every day... just get in the habit of testing and taking care of your self. My only problems now are weight gain from 35 years of insulin that i cannot lose, yes, my eyes have changed, but I get them checked religiously every 6 months to ward off any problems. I see my diabetic doctor every 3 months for blood work, again to catch any problems. I am starting to have circulation problems with my feet, but they are watching this. Diabetes is not the worse disease to have. If you eat right, exercise and watch your blood sugar levels, you will live a long healthy life. My mom is 86 and has been a diabetic since she was 20..with no problems!!!!.. Just go to your Dr. as much as he / she requires and stay in control. Good Luck!

my husband is 35 and type 1. After years of not really trying to control his diabetes two years ago his kidneys failed and he went on dialysis for a year before his sister gave him a kidney. his eyes are slowly fading, he can only see out of one eye now, hopefully the surgery scheduled soon will save the sight he has. he had heart surgery, to clear a blockage because the diabetes helped to drive up his cholesterol. He is legally blind, disabled and unable to drive or work. He wishes that he had taken his doctors advice and started taking care of himself earlier. He was 9 when diagnosed, and until he moved out of his mothers.. fine. Then he discontinued watching his sugars and not taking care of his body. When we got together, he began to take care of himself again, but the damage had been done.
He will be getting a pancreas transplant soon, they only give them to type 1's who are in End Stage Renal Disease..(kidney failure) After that, he may have a better chance of long term survival without dialysis. He takes over 30 pills a day, anti-infection, anti-rejection, etc.. HE tells everyone he meets that is diabetic and not taking care of himself he is the poster child for what not to do.

I am 42 and have been diabetic since I was 15.
I have no diabetes-related problems other than the care of diabetes itself.
No eye trouble, kidney problems, neuropathy, gastroparesis, etc.
