The risks of surgery for a 1-week old infant is not trivial, but that has to be balanced against the risks of NOT having surgery. Doctors don't make a call like this lightly, and it is very probable the infant has a life-threatening condition that must be addressed immediately (such a hole in the heart).

While not an everyday occurrence, neither is this sort of surgery rare. Pediatric anesthesiologists are well-trained for this sort of thing -- don't be too concerned about that part of the surgery.

These are questions you should be asking the Doctor of the infant. It is not uncommon for an infant to undergo heart surgery. If it something that will ultimately help the child, then trust your Doctor to do the right thing. Also, feel free to get a second opinion to feel better about it.

Ok, Im a 33 year old mom that had twins, 1 died in my arms 2 hours after she was born, but my son survived, & had his very first surgery at 14 hours old to connect his stomach & esphogus together, 24 hours later I was told he has congential heart disease called Tettolgoy of Follet, a hole in the heartthat cuased the blue & red blood to mix together. This was done at 5 1/2 months old, 2 weeks later he had to have a fundoplacation done to (what I call a tummy tuck), but it was so he can digest his food faster due to failure to thrive syndrome.

Going through this was the hardest thing I ever went through in my life, so yes it cna be done, can it be safe, yeas it can, it saved my sons life, & hes 9 1/2 years old now & going strong! Is it scary to go through as a parent? Hell yes it is, is it scary for the child/infant, Im sure it is, they dont know how to communicate to you soemthings worng, or hey mom I dont feel right. While all we can do is step back & comfort them, knowing we as there parents CANT take that pain away, becuase if we could, we would in a heart beat!!!! Seeing your children hurt & in pain, & 1 die in your arms is HELL! Theres not a day I go that I dont think of my daughter. I can only be thankful that she too didnt go through what our son went through too, because 2 babies going through hell at the same time wouldve been so hard on both the babies.

The surgeon waits as long as possible to let the infant mature. If they plan surgery that early, the condition is life threatening. Anesthesia and pain relief will be the same as an adult taylored to his weight.

i think of you misunderstood the nurse. She meant do no longer enable anymore than 3 hrs pass between feedings. You feed that toddler despite she asks for. in case you probably did no longer pass over understand her then she is clueless. As a mom who has in straightforward terms formula fed i will inform you that she must be eating each and every 2-3 hrs. Or On call for basically like breast feeding. @ Whoever reported formula makes youngsters fat. Giving a newborn formula won't lead them to fat. I even have 2 formula fed daughters. a million is unquestionably thank you to skinny, she's 6 and has a intense metabolism and refuses to consume for her father and step mom. My different daughter is 15 mos and however she is a sprint chunky this is a wholesome chew. Neither has ever been over weight. your persons youngster is over weight because of the fact the two there is something medically incorrect or he has a detrimental foodstuff plan. Why won't be ready to you breast feed her yet? If its because of the fact your milk hasn't are available in yet whoever informed you it quite is clueless? if it quite is so then ditch the formula and breastfeed. The colostrum which you have in the previous your milk is provided in is what's maximum extreme. I say this because of the fact many nurses and docs push formula. and many have no theory what they are talking approximately and could provide fake data because of the fact they don't know any extra suitable. Now many different docs know precisely what they are talking approximately while in includes breastfeeding.

I won't lie to you, it is very risky. My cousin had to undergo an operation on his heart when he was only a week old. He is now 24 and doing good. He still has a few problems with his heart, but nothing like he would have if he didn't undergo the surgery.

My cousin's son was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) and had his first open-heart surgery at 1 week old and his second surgery at 3 months old. They have drugs that paralyze him and sedate him, but they do have to "detox" and ween him off of the drugs slowly. But if he didn't have the surgeries, HLHS is 100% fatal.
There is more information on his web site if you want to read it

Surgery is performed on fetuses in utero. Yes, it is ok. What may not be okay is for the defect to go uncorrected.
The baby will be in no pain and will have no memory of this.
