If the doctor prescribed medications for strep, they should also have given her something prescribed for coughing, which usually accompanies a case of strep. If they didn't, simply call them back and ask them to call it in to the pharmacy. Over the counter cough formulas won't be effective in the case of a strep infectious cough, so go ahead and call in the morning.

They may actually want to see her brought in so that they can tell if she has bronchitis or if the strep infection has turned to pneumonia, which it sometimes does. But if she is fever free, and acting normally and only coughing, then they should call you in a prescription over the phone.

The cough could be viral, so she could very well have had both a viral infection, plus strep (bacterial). I would take her to the doctor again tomorrow if you could, because strep is nothing to fool around with. As far as sleeping goes, your best bet is probably a prescription cough medicine with a bit of codeine in it. You're not going to be able to find that tonight without a doctor's help. Can you call his/her answering service and get him/her pages so a prescription can be phoned in tonight? Other than that, those typical cough meds like Robitussin are completely worthless. Something like cherry bark preparation, which can be bought in a health food store are just as effective, without all the other stuff. If she is also running a fever, especially over 102, I might consider taking her to the ER tonight. Other than that, hot tea with honey and lemon might soothe it a bit. Chloraseptic spray is good for sore throats. She needs a lot of sleep to heal, and if she has that wracking cough, it's going to be a rough night. My heart goes out to you and her.

the cough has nothing to do with the strep. nor does it have anything to do with the meds she took. she took antibiotics to kill the strep bacteria, and she cough is viral. one thing i have found to really help with a virus is called sambucol. it can be found in health food stores, is made of elderberry and i think echanacea. was developed by a virologist. won't ease the cough, but will treat the cause, which will take care of the cough as it kills the virus. as for easing the cough, the best thing i have found, unfortunately, the only thing i have found to work is a little hard core. phenergan with codeine. prescription only, and i really try not to give it to my kids, only when i am a t my wits end. i try to treat them naturally if i can. thayers brand natural remedies slippery elm lozenges really works well for sore throat, and may help with cough, i haven't tried it for cough yet. hope some of this helps---and strep and cough usually do NOT go hand in hand. strep does NOT turn into pneumonia. i am a nurse, and know the pathophysiology of it all, trust me it is viral, and you can either let it run its course or treat it with the sambucol, either work fine, she will get over it, and also you don't usually want to suppress a cough, it may then turn into pneumonia, the draingage not coughed up goes into the lungs.

Until you can get her back to the doctor to be rechecked a hot shower or a humidifer can moisterize you throat. Also sucking on a hard candy can lubricate the throat. I know that when my kids get strep they say their throat tickles and makes them cough. Sometime Vicks 44 cough syrup works well too.

you need to inform the doctor that she has the cough....since strep is a bacterial infection
also, you need to give her a cough medication that is a suppressant and not a expectorant (that would cause he to cough more-those are used to break up the mucus) so that she can sleep as much as possible tonight-also make sure she is drinking lots of liquids...and then tomorrow call the doc...
also if she gets really congested and is having trouble breathing steam up the bathroom and take her in there....it can help her to breath better..
....hope she gets to feeling better soon!

Give her something to help soothe her throat. Anything that helps.

Now, did she take all of her antibiotics correctly? Did she take all of her pills and took them as prescribed? If she did then her cough is not an infection, it is probably a virus which will just have to run its course. Antibiotics do NOT kill viruses. Give her something to soothe the cough and she should be better in a few days.
