Coughing up Hard Things?

Did a search on here..and found posts about coughing up bad smelling white chunks. Been there with tonsilitis, not that. I cough up huge (hard to cough up) things. Over 1/2"wide,maybe 3/4" long,1/4" thick. Covered in mucous,consistency of hard rubber. Some parts of it are like tan mucous colored..some more clear..some like when you cough up old blood (brownish). Aprox. 2 weeks ago was put on antibiotics and Zyrtec to breack up mucous after what dr said was just a sinus infection irritating my throat (had a horrible sore throat like Strep). Sinuses didn't hurt at all but was congested. For weeks my throat has been acting up. Coughing up normal stuff for weeks. Coughed up a smaller hard thing the day before this huge one.Afterwards my throat feels alot less irritated, like that thing was stuck behind or on my tonsils. Don't have the need to clear my throat all the time now.

it was a mucos plug. one thing you can do to help yourself is drink plenty of water to keep your secretions loose.

I'm a nurse. This is a good thing that you are getting all that stuff out of your body. Do you have a fever? If so you need to be taking Tylenol or ibuprofen (take as directed). Are you still congested? If so you need more antibiotics to completely get rid of whatever you have. Call back to the doctors office and ask for additional medication. I hope you feel better soon.

Have you had a history of problems with your tonsils? Do you tonsils have like little holes in them? I have something (can't remember what it is called) where my tonsils have developed holes in them because of repeated tonsil infections and strep throat. Sometimes the holes get smelly hard things in them that when I cough they loosen and come up. The Dr said the name of it but I can't remember he just said it is nothing to worry about but yes it can really smell bad and sometimes make your breath stink too.

Get those tonsils removed. When I was a kid most children had this operation to keep just this sort of thing from happening. Now days most of the modern medicos say all those simple surgeries weren't needed. I say B.S. The tonsils collect bacteria like magnets and it spreads up into the sinus passages etc.

Sound like what I just went through. It's crud from your sinuses, and if it's coming out that's good. Try some mucinex to thin things out and get it moving faster, but read the labels of everything you're taking so you don't double-dose any active ingredients.
