A pap smear only detects the beginings of cervical cancer. The swabs they take along with the smear is what detects STD's.
And, YES the swabs will detect the presence of the disease even if you don't feel anything.
Many STD's don't show symptoms for a long while anyway, that's why it's so important to get tested.
Cheers.

yes, a pap smear definitely can detect chlamydia. Others may need an actual blood test. But as for chlamydia and some others sure. When a pap is taken it detects a number of things not just cervical cancer.

pap smear is primarily done as a screening test to detect initial stages of cancer cervix when its still treatable....however pap smear can be falsely positive in acute inflammatory conditions too, like genital herpes sometimes, which r infective but non cancerous conditions

but it doesn t detect stds like gonorrhoea or chlamydia..there r separate tests for them..

and ya..not necessarily symptoms will be present..chlamydia is notorious for long asymptomatic intervals..though considerable number of patients report discharge comin out of genitals etc and feelin of uneasiness too

No. The test is done at the same time as a pap. Your doctor usually does it at the same time because with a majority of omen there aren't any symptoms.

No, they require separate tests, but the sample can be taken at the same time as the Pap smear.

Pap smears only test for abnormal cervical cells.

Normally the doc takes some other swabs of the vagina...but if you are interested in a certain test, ask and make sure that the Doc tests for it.

My doc doesnt even test me for anything anymore, she asks me first...since i am in a monogamous relationship.

Depends. A pap should show any unusual activity going on in the vagina. You can always ask to get tested specifically for those if you wanted too.

I'm a nurse. Yes any std will be made known at the time of appointment. You can also repeat it at a latter date, but I wouldn't. Go on the first results.
