My mom and two brothers have type 2 diabetes. My grandpa also had it. No one on my dad's side does, though. Do I have to become overweight to get it? I am not overweight, but I'm afraid I will.

You do not have to be overweight to contract diabetes. Yes, you have a greater risk of contracting it since it runs in the family. Maintain a well balanced low sodium diet and drink plenty of water. You do have a chance to outrun it.

I really have to jump in here. There a ton of general rules about being susceptible to diabetes but I don't believe any of them!!!

I am diabetic, type 2. I spent 22 years in the US Air Force maintained my weight, and passed all physical fitness tests ever administered to me. I am 5' 9" and weigh less than 160 pounds.
My Dad was considered borderline. He was instructed to eliminate sugar from his diet. He took NO pill and didn't have a glucose meter. My maternal grandmother was insulin dependant in her later years. That's all folks!! No other known incidents of diabetes as far back as I can find reliable information. NO aunt, uncles or cousins I know of have diabetes.

Now my wife, same age as I am, and about the same height, within a half inch, is currently diabetes free. Her Mother is diabetic, her Father was, three of four siblings, one insulin dependant. She has diabetes in grandparents on both sides and most of her aunts and uncles. My wife has NEVER weighed less than I do. She has been over 200 pounds 33 out of the 35 years we have been married. And a portion, perhaps 5 years, she was very close to 300 pounds and maybe more. In other words, she has everything going against her and I have the diabetes.

So there it is folks. Generalities only hold up generally. And you sir, are a specific individual and IMO if you are going to diabetes that's the end of the issue; you will most assuredly get it.

Now on the realistic side, when you have your annual physical, ask your doctor to include an AIC test in your blood work. It is a test that is supposed to determine a three month average glucose level. If it is under 7 my Dr. would be very happy.

Good luck, and don’t stop living just on the chance you might get this crap. Treat yourself with some respect and get those annual physicals.

You described your brothers and mother as having diabetes, NIDDM (non-Insulin Dependendent Diabetes Mellitus) and then described yourself as not overweight. What this indicates is that your mother and brother are overweight. While a propensity for developing type-2 diabetes may be genetic, the development of the disease is far more dependent on your body make-up, diet, exercise. Keep in mind that a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes means that you have a fasting blood sugar of 126mg/dl and nothing more.

Being overweight is a contributing factor for developing impaired glucose tolerance (a precursor to diabetes). As long as you maintain a healthy body weight plus a reasonable amount of body fat you should be fine.

Do you share the body shape of your brothers or your father?

its a myth that only fat ppl get type 2 diebetes. its a myth thats getting alot of younger ppl in troulble. ive never heard of a high sodium diet as a cause as stated earlier. if so, id like to see the study.processed sugar has become the everyday and for some, every meal norm. watch that daily carb count. that incudes ALL carbs. there s no such things as good carbs. they all turn to sugar. it's needed in our body, but not so mch of it
