I'm REALLY freaked out about needles, but I need to have my blood taken.

Is there any thing I can do to make it hurt less, Or simply to calm myself down?
Any ideas would be great,

1.) Tell the phlebotolist that you are scared and they will be extra nice and work with you,
2.) You may want to lay down rather than sit down to have your blood taken,
3.) Some people find that looking away from the needle is helpful,
4.) Take long, slow deep breaths
5.) ASK THE PHLOBOTOMIST TO USE A "BUTTERFLY NEEDLE"! They are the smallest needles and it really helps.

I'm sorry honey, I fainted while they did 4 moths ago. But last time I didn't:

So here's what I did differently:
1. Take ur bf with u! (or any man, maybe ur father, never someone who freaks out more than u do, or makes noises).
2. EAT a large amount of fruit the night before. And also an egg.
3. Go with a REAL proffesional, not just some phony helper.
4. DON'T look at the blood while it's filling up the needle tube.
5. Squeeze something and close ur eyes!.

And that's about it, sweetie!.

Good luck and merry christmas!.

:) a friend.

I'm freaked out by needles too, but I solved the problem by looking away and trying to joke around with the technician about my anxiety. A lot depends on the skill of the technician too - some are MUCH better than others. In fact, during the last blood test I had, there was absolutely no pain whatsoever !!!

I always find that if I talk with the person who is talking my blood that I forget about the needle and by the time we have finished talking about one topic the blood has been taken and the needle has been removed. You might also try singing your favorite song to yourself or thinking about some things you will do after you leave the doctors office.

Don't look at the needle. And before you have to take the blood out, just relax and take a deep breath. Don't think about what's going to happen. Just focus on what will happen afterwards.

An ice pack will dull the pain
make sure it is not too cold so it does not do skin damage
not all lab tec's will do this and you may need to bring your own
but we do this for kids who are inpatients all the time

also before they do it relax and breath deeply and think of place that calms you and put yourself there

I have a 6' son who passes out and for good reason. He had
a horrible drawing at age 16...I witnessed it. What I suggest is what he has done now.....a pre-shot of anesthesia...they don't like doing it because they say it tends to make the vein shrink....well he hasn't had a problem since. Personally, I think it's because it costs them more.

uhm..id say you should try asking your doctor..or just think about what could happen to you if you dont get it done. i dont like needles either, so when they have to give me a shot or whatever, i look away and grab something and just squeeze it. it helps. it doesnt really even hurt for more than like a couple seconds, it feels like a pinch. hope i helped.
